Guiding Voices Behind Our Mission

Because at the CHR Faculty of Law Legal Center for Constitutionalism and Human Rights, our commitment to justice, equality, and the rule of law is implemented not just in the classroom, but in the field. Through the eyes of our alumni and participants, their stories demonstrate the difference our programs make, and the power that advanced legal studies can have on ameliorating injustice. Below is a selection of testimonials that highlight the learning, growth, and advocacy that is fostered at our Center.
Alumni Feature: Prepared for Practical Law
“The Center equipped me with a robust understanding of U.S. constitutional law and human rights advocacy. The faculty’s expertise and willingness to mentor went far beyond the classroom setting. Through participating in the Center’s legal clinics, I applied all that I learned directly to real cases, impacting clients and communities. Those experiences have shaped the way I approach my work, now, as a public interest attorney.”
– Sarah Thompson, J.D. 2021, Civil Rights Advocate, New York
A Center of Learning and Diversity of Thought
“The most rewarding aspect of my time at the Center was the eclectic views offered at every seminar and event. The space fostered critical thinking and open dialogue on pressing constitutional matters of international relevance. The international law modules were also highly enriching, allowing me to think broadly in how US norms interact with global human rights regimes. I benefited greatly from my time there, and emerged from my studies confident to engage across national and global legal fields.”
Dr. Miguel Hernández, LL.M. 2022, Legal Scholar
Pivotal Learning Experiences Beyond The Classroom
“It is the practical and hands-on approach of the CHR Faculty of Law Legal Center that sets it apart. From our very first day we have been encouraged to participate in outreach programs, legal clinics in the community and moot court competitions. Those experiences fostered my advocacy skills and embed my commitment to social justice. I owe a great deal to the Center for inspiring my career in constitutional litigation.”
– Priya Patel, J.D. 2020, Constitutional Litigation Fellow
Faculty Mentorship That Stands Out
The faculty at the Center are much more than subject-matter experts-they are professors who genuinely care about their students and want to see them grow. The faculty were very helpful while I conducted my research on comparative constitutional studies, and they were always more than willing to keep the lines of communication open and work together on various research projects. This collaborative academic environment helped me publish my first law review article, which I considered impossible at one point.
Bridging Theory and Practice In Student Advocacy
“Taking part in the Center’s specialized curriculum in gender and sexuality law was a pivotal moment in my legal training. This multidimensional subject is covered in a lively way, pairing current issues with ever-developing areas of law. The Center’s focus on advocacy and outreach led me to start an initiative supporting LGBTQ rights in my community. What I learned and who I know informs my advocacy today.”
Creating Change Agents
“The network added value to my education. Whether through classmates, faculty, or guest lecturers, I was surrounded by fellow students dedicated to creating change. Group projects and Center-sponsored events facilitated the application of theory to practice. I still draw from this community for professional support and inspiration.”
Global Reach and Global Mission
“As an international student, I was moved by the Center’s emphasis on inclusivity and interconnectedness of U.S. legal principles with global human rights issues. The Center’s programming and research opportunities provided me with a platform to fully engage these topics of law, culture, and policy. That experience has helped tremendously in my current position with an international NGO and is nothing short of life-changing.”
