Research Opportunities

Innovative Legal Research at the CHR Faculty of Law Legal Center

At the CHR Faculty of Law Legal Center for Constitutionalism and Human Rights, our motto is that spearheading research constitutes a core driver of innovation in human rights and constitutional law. As a leading academic institution affiliated with Charles University in the United States, our interdisciplinary Center is dedicated to facilitating cutting-edge research that addresses the most relevant legal and social questions of our times. Whether you are a law student eager to broaden your understanding of US constitutional law, or an experienced legal practitioner looking to engage in and contribute to ambitious projects, legal research opportunities at our Center are specially tailored to empower, inspire, and equip you for a vanguard position in legal advocacy.

A Wide Array of Research Opportunities

The CHR Legal Center offers an array of pathways to research designed for different interests and aspirations. Our students and affiliates work on U.S. constitutional law, advanced human rights research, international law, gender and sexuality scholarship, and comparative constitution-making. Each experience is mentored by our world-class faculty and benefits from the Center’s academic standards and resources. Research participants gain empirical experience, doctrinal training, policy drafting skills, and collaborative legal writing-all within a close-knit, intellectually charged academic environment.

Research Fellowships and Research Assistantships

For law students and recent graduates, the Center offers competitive research fellowships and assistantships. Fellowships enable participants to work closely with faculty on current Center projects or to plan original, independent research under faculty supervision. Fellows play a leading role in preparing reports that shape the national conversation in U.S. constitutional and human rights law, assisting with amicus briefs in significant cases, and drafting policy positions adopted by government jurisdictions or included as legislative language. Assistantships also come with stipends and academic credit, making them an ideal stepping stone to an academic career or public interest law practice.

Student-Faculty Research Collaborations

We empower students to design their own research agendas. Students in the Center’s Student Research Collective (SRC) engage in peer-directed study and interdisciplinary collaboration. Its members have designed and executed independent projects, organized symposia and conferences, and published articles in the CHR Law Review. With faculty support, students identify meaningful emerging problems-whether examining the impact of technology on privacy rights, voting rights in a digital world, the intersection of constitutional law with climate justice, or any other combination of issues that may arise. These endeavors sharpen students’ leadership skills while building original scholarship that provides a novel voice to help advance the wider legal community.

Research Consortia and Partnerships

In recognizing the global character of constitutionalism and human rights, the Center collaborates with premier universities, NGOs, and think tanks in consortia worldwide. Participants conduct comparative research on legal issues, trans-jurisdictional policy analysis, and joint advocacy campaigns. Past collaborations have included projects focusing on transnational migration law, the use of international human rights treaties in US courts, and the comparative study of constitutional amendments. These partnership opportunities provide participants with valuable networking experience and exposure to diverse policy environments and methods.

Faculty Research Projects

Our renowned faculty lead major research initiatives at the forefront of legal scholarship. Current projects explore the emerging jurisprudence of the U.S. Supreme Court, structural impediments to greater equality in the American legal system, and the capacity of constitutional law to protect civil liberties during national crises. Law students and practicing professionals participate through annotated research, data gathering, legal writing, and critical papers and proposals. Faculty-led projects often result in government-wide publications, policy whitepapers, and recommendations that advise legislative and judicial outcomes.

Publication and Dissemination Venues

The Center invests in research that extends beyond academia. Participants routinely publish scholarship in the CHR Law Review, contribute to faculty-edited collections, travel to national and international venues to present their work, and disseminate research findings through public lectures, webinars, and briefings to judges, legislators, and advocacy organizations. The Center’s Legal Research Excellence Awards recognize outstanding student research and encourage participants to achieve outcomes that impact both academic achievement and real-world success.

Applied Impact: Shaping Law and Policy

Research conducted at the CHR Legal Center goes beyond scholarship to make a tangible impact. Scholars have drafted model laws, supported strategic litigation, and provided formal advice to government ministries and civil society organizations on constitutional and human rights issues. Recent student research has contributed to changes in New York State’s voting rights laws and influenced police accountability policy reform. By integrating scholarship with advocacy, our research remains relevant and responsive to society’s needs.

Mentoring, Training, and Support

Participants in our research programs benefit from one-on-one mentoring with faculty experts and take part in specialized research training. Workshops in legal methodology, empirical research methods, and advanced constitutional theory are offered regularly. With support from the Center’s research coordinators, participants receive guidance in project management, grant proposal development, and publication planning. Every participant receives individual attention to ensure they have the resources necessary to succeed and thrive. Our collaborative environment nurtures intellectual curiosity and provides a lifelong professional community for researchers, faculty, and alumni.
