Engaging Minds: Events and Lectures at the CHR Faculty of Law Legal Center

At the CHR Faculty of Law Legal Center for Constitutionalism and Human Rights, our goal is to promote human rights and constitutional law beyond the spirit of the classroom and into the community at large. Encompassed in a bustling academic calendar of conferences, lectures, presentations, and community actions, we engage in ongoing conversation among law students, legal practitioners, and activists who share a passion for exploring, discussing, and creating the next chapter of justice in the United States. These events create opportunities for learning, networking, and active participation in a variety of real-world implementations.
Upcoming Events: Spring & Summer 2024 Highlights
This year’s Center events program is more dynamic and powerful than ever. Our 2024 Spring and Summer schedule is full of lectures, panels, and highly interactive workshops hosted by the Center and its members on hot-button issues in U.S. human rights and constitutional law. Upcoming event highlights include:
Spring 2024
- Annual Constitutional Law Symposium, April 18, 2024: Our signature conference featuring a diverse mix of leading scholars, judges, litigators, and other practitioners exploring the development of free speech and due process in the digital realm.
- Justice in Action: Emerging Trends in Gender & Equality Law, May 22, 2024: An interactive workshop covering recent developments in gender rights, featuring expert-led case studies and breakout sessions.
- International Human Rights Forum, June 14, 2024: Global panel featuring guest speakers from the United Nations and our local partner international NGOs, discussing the impact of U.S. constitutional legal principles on broader human rights protections worldwide.
Summer 2024
- Alumni Insight: Careers in Constitutional Law, July 10, 2024: A networking evening where our recent graduates offer valuable advice to students on seeking jobs in the legal field.
Signature Lecture Series: Deep Dives into Constitutional Issues
Borrowing from the descriptor found on the HLS Center on the Legal Profession website, our signature lecture series is the intellectual foundation of the Center’s public programming. Here, we invite prominent members of the bar, as well as jurists and policymaking figures, to deliver provocative lectures on seminal issues such as First Amendment rights, equal protection and due process, and judicial review. Past guests have included Justice Evelyn Morales of the New York Supreme Court on “Judicial Independence in a Polarized Era” and Professor Henry Cho on comparative constitutionalism in North America. Open to the public and free of charge, these programs offer the opportunity for public dialogue with some of the legal profession’s leading academic voices.
Interactive Workshops: Building Practical Legal Skills
Rather than solely lectures, the Center seeks to enable participants through teach-by-doing. Our experiential workshops, from mock appellate arguments to legal writing clinics, hone advocacy skills and nurture professional development. This spring, participants may join the ‘Constitutional Litigation Bootcamp’, a week-long “mini-term” experience that replicates a famous Supreme Court case. Sessions led by faculty with lengthy experience off the bench (or in the executive branch) provide useful, practitioner-ready guidance at every stage.
Open Access: Who Can Participate?
The Center’s workshops and lectures are intentionally broad in scope, as we feel that promoting constitutionalism and human rights requires all points of view. We welcome:
- Current and future law students who wish to expand their knowledge in U.S. constitutional law
- Legal practitioners who wish to keep up-to-date with emerging jurisprudence
- Academics and researchers pursuing cutting-edge legal scholarship
- Community activists and the public interested in justice and equality
Most programs are free, or include a nominal registration fee to support our broader outreach efforts. Participation in some workshops is limited – please register early.
