About Us

Welcome to the CHR Faculty of Law Legal Center for Constitutionalism and Human Rights

At the forefront of legal education and advocacy, the CHR Faculty of Law Legal Center for Constitutionalism and Human Rights stands as a beacon for those dedicated to the advancement of justice, equality, and the rule of law. As part of Charles University’s Faculty of Law in the United States, our Center is committed to building a strong foundation of human rights and constitutional knowledge, equipping a new generation of legal practitioners and advocates with the tools necessary to create a more just world.

Our vision is to foster both human rights and constitutionalism

The CHR Faculty of Law Legal Center’s mission is to promote, protect, and explore the understanding of human rights and constitutional law in the United States and abroad. We are convinced that constitutionalism and the vigorous defense of human rights form an essential foundation for durable progress and justice. With a unique combination of academic training, practical experience, and dynamic public outreach, we work to develop lawyers trained to meet the most urgent challenges facing our country and the world.

Excellence in legal education and research

At the heart of our Center’s reputation is our innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum that responds to emerging issues in the legal world. Our faculty – leaders in scholarship and in practice in the U.S. and abroad – teach a spectrum of courses from intensive core courses in constitutional law to seminars in gender and sexuality, international human rights, and comparative constitutional law. Students and scholars participate in cutting-edge research projects that shape policy debates and expand scholarly conversations surrounding justice under U.S. law.

Commitment to making a real difference in the world

Here at the Legal Center, we believe every legal education should go beyond the classroom. Our programs are intentionally designed to incorporate legal experience, preparing our students and fellows with the skills to confront the challenges that shape today’s legal landscape. From legal clinics and advocacy workshops to interning with top rights organizations on the ground, we give our community hands-on experience of the complexities of fighting for justice within the U.S. legal system.

Diversity of programmes and opportunities

Legal courses cover the full gamut of U.S. human rights and constitutional law; specialized programs give focus to emerging topics including the rise of digital rights, climate justice, and transnational legal advocacy. In our events calendar, guest lecturers, panel discussions, and symposia bring thought leaders, practitioners, and students together to engage in the discussions of the day. Whether you are a law student, attorney, or advocate seeking to increase your current impact or expand your involvement, the CHR Legal Center pushes you out of your comfort zone in a nurturing, challenging environment where learning meets leadership.

A faculty of leaders and innovators

Our Faculty serves as the core of the Center. Comprising distinguished scholars, experienced litigators, and notable public intellectuals, the teaching faculty at CHR Legal Center are recognized as authorities in human rights and constitutional law on both national and global scales. With extensive combined experience in promoting human rights through various means-such as legal research, advocacy, legal practice, and capacity building for more effective human rights advocacy-our faculty mentors engage students with complex legal issues while guiding them towards fostering global change.

Impactful outreach activities and advocacy

The CHR Legal Center is also dedicated to outreach and advocacy beyond education and research. We work in partnership with community groups, government organizations, and other agencies internationally to support initiatives that strengthen justice and equality, and protect core fair trial rights. Outreach efforts include pro bono representation, policy advocacy campaigns, and education that empower marginalized communities. These efforts not only have profound impact in society at large, but enrich students’ educations by linking theory taught in the classroom to reality.

Global perspective, local commitment

Although our home is in the United States, the work of the CHR Legal Center is international in perspective. Our research, teaching, and outreach activities are focused on domestic and foreign legal settings alike because the concerns of human rights and constitutional governance are global in nature. We draw a diverse range of students and professionals from throughout the country and all over the world who share a community of perspectives on how we pursue justice.
