The meeting of CHR with representatives of the Uyghur diaspora at the residence of the US Ambassador

On Thursday, October 19, 2023, members of the Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (prof. Helena Hofmannová and Mgr. Karel Řepa, Ph.D.) and four students from the Faculty of Law at Charles University (Sára Eva Neničková, Lenka Hanušová, Magdaléna Milbachová, and Helena Šmolková) had the opportunity to visit the residence of the US Ambassador. The Centre received the invitation based on the creation of a unique "Policy paper" titled: "Recommendations to the Czech Republic's public authorities concerning crimes against humanity and genocide of Uyghurs in the People's Republic of China," which was created by the students themselves.

The event was held to honor the unique Uyghur cultural heritage and to support discussions about the international community's efforts to promote the human rights of Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang region. As part of the program, there were performances by "Mangu Miras," showcasing traditional Uyghur dances and songs presented by the renowned Uyghur musician Saniyam Ismail.

The authors of the Policy paper and members of the Centre had a unique opportunity to acquaint themselves with and discuss the Policy paper and its potential use with the US Ambassador, Bijan Sabet. The event was attended by members of the Uyghur minority and high-ranking representatives of Uyghur advocacy organizations. Notable attendees included Dolqun Isa, the President of the World Uyghur Congress, and Enver Can, the President of the Ilham Tohti Initiative.
